AFTERCARE
BEFORE GETTING TATTOOED!
Come well rested.
Come Fed.
Come Hydrated.
Come with snacks! Especially for longer sessions, it’s important to keep your blood sugar up, because getting tattooed is the biggest workout you can do without actually working out!
Please don’t be sunburned and if you know your appointment is coming up, try and keep that area covered and protected from the sun!
GENERAL
Always wash your hands thoroughly with HOT water and liquid antibacterial soap.
Washing your tattoo 2-3 times daily with hot water and liquid antibacterial soap may drastically increase the health of the healing.
Please be aware when washing to wash off all plasma, especially after any color packing. If you allow this plasma to dry it can result in scabbing and impacting the tattoo. This can lead to ink scabbing and falling out/ scarring.
After washing take a clean paper towel and dry it thoroughly. Then let it air dry for a few minutes and make sure there are no tacky plasma parts.
If there are please rewash with hot water to ensure they are removed.
Do not submerge the tattoo in water.
After you’ve been tattooed and are wrapped, keep the wrap on until later that night or overnight if you were tattooed later in the day.
The next morning wash your tattoo and let it air out and breathe.
Continue washing your tattoo 2-3 times daily with hot water and liquid antibacterial soap.
Only after washing and drying the tattoo thoroughly, with clean hands, you may start using a water-based, fragrance-free lotion (for example Lubriderm, Eucerin, Aveeno, Cetaphil, etc.) when the tattoo is feeling tight, dry, and maybe peeling.
Derm Shield
After your artist applies the Derm Shield please leave it on for 3-5 days.
if you are experiencing any irritation please slowly peel off and start general aftercare.
It is normal to see plasma, and ink pooling underneath the saniderm, this is called weeping.
When taking Derm Shield off, you can pull it carefully from the bottom up.
Once off, wash your tattoo 2-3 times daily with hot water and liquid antibacterial soap. Washing off all secreted plasma, during your cleaning process, may result in a superior healing process.
NOTE- Allowing plasma to dry may result in scabbing, which may negatively (VERY NEGATIVELY) affect the quality and healing.
Plasma, and bacteria, can be reduced by drying a tattoo thoroughly after wiping it with a clean paper towel and let air dry for a minute. Gently rub your clean hand over your tattoo to feel for any remaining plasma.
If you feel any “tacky” spots or see any “shiny” spots, please wash them to remove them. HOT showers are great for healing tattoos but do not keep the tattoo submerged under water.
Continue washing your tattoo as before and leave it be. Once the tattoo feels dry and tight (about to start peeling like a bad sunburn), you could now start using a water-based, fragrance-free lotion (for example: Lubriderm, Eucerin, etc.).
Use moisturizer after washing and when the tattoo feels dry. Do not overuse lotion and make sure to keep your skin clean.
Your tattoo will start to peel like a bad sunburn. Continue using the lotion until your skin looks and feels normal again.
The “dry phase” differs for each person. I do not put a time limit on the lotion as it is good skin care.
Your artist will give you verbal directions that are specific to your tattoo.
THINGS NOT TO DO
Do not pick or scratch your tattoo. If the itching is bothering you, apply more lotion.
Do not submerge your tattoo under water for any extended period of time. This included baths, pools, hot tubs, oceans and lakes, etc. This will have a great effect on how well your tattoo heals. Showers and running water are great for a short period to wash your tattoo.
Do not wear tight clothing over your tattoo. This will rub and irritate your tattoo and could damage it.
Do not expose your tattoo to the sun or tanning bed during healing. This will damage your skin and the tattoo. Any kind of UV light will damage your skin and tattoo with enough exposure whether healed or not.
After completely healed you can use sunblock to prevent damage to a point. 50 SPF or higher is recommended.
Consult a healthcare provider for Unexpected redness, tenderness, or swelling at the site of the tattoo; Any rash; Unexpected drainage at or from the site of the tattoo; A fever within 24 hours of the tattoo
